Russia Strikes Kyiv After Pause for U.S Envoys Visit, Killing 5 and Injuring Nearly 30

Russia resumed its air attacks on Kyiv following a brief pause for the visit of U.S. peace negotiators on September 8, resulting in the death of five individuals and injuring nearly 30 others, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The overnight assault involved drones and missiles, leading to significant destruction across several districts. Reports indicate that at least 14 high-rise buildings, along with a dormitory, a school, a clinic, and various warehouses sustained damage. Kyiv is currently experiencing significant violence and chaos due to ongoing Russian attacks, as described by Katarina Mathernova, the EU ambassador to Ukraine, who noted that the city was “exploding and burning.” Explosions have been reported throughout the city, with Russian drones carrying out strikes into Tuesday afternoon. Tragically, two more individuals were killed in a recent strike on a warehouse, raising the total death toll in Kyiv to five, as stated by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Additionally, nearly 30 people have sustained injuries from these assaults.

In another incident, a Russian drone attack partially destroyed a building associated with a Ukrainian television channel, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Amidst this turmoil, U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff departed from Kyiv on Sunday after discussions with Zelenskiy, as the Trump administration intensifies its efforts to resolve the enduring conflict that has persisted for over four years.

They arrived after discussions in Moscow, where the Kremlin indicated a possibility of reinitiating three-way negotiations that would also involve the United States. To ensure the safety of U.S. peace negotiators, both Moscow and Kyiv agreed to a temporary truce, halting strikes on their capitals for three days. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on allies to intensify pressure on Moscow and supply interceptors capable of downing ballistic missiles, as Ukraine reserves of these systems are critically low.

President Zelenskiy characterized the assaults as complex, designed to inflict maximum harm on civilians, stating that ballistic missiles remain particularly challenging to intercept. The Ukrainian air force reported successfully intercepting nearly all cruise missiles and two ballistic missiles during this period. Leading up to the negotiations, Russia escalated air attacks on Kyiv and surrounding regions, shifting to near-constant assaults, employing faster jet-propelled drones that resulted in civilian casualties and disrupted daily life.

Attacks On Passenger Trains

Recent attacks on passenger trains in Ukraine have left a trail of destruction and tragedy. Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi reported that along with Kyiv, eight other regions were targeted, with close to 100 people evacuated after a drone strike hit a train in the Sumy region. The destruction led to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to three others in the Kyiv area, as announced by regional governor Tymur Tkachenko via Telegram.

Ukrzaliznytsia, the national railway operator, confirmed that another commuter train was struck, compounding fears for passenger safety, as some evacuees remained too close and suffered shrapnel wounds. In a harrowing incident in Zaporizhzhia, a railway worker lost his life during a double-tap drone attack on a passenger train. Fortunately, emergency services reported that all passengers were evacuated in that instance.

The strikes extended beyond railways, with additional attacks occurring in Odesa, resulting in injuries to three people at a market. Meanwhile, Moldova reported incidents in which Russian drones fell and caused fires in fields, illustrating the regional instability. One drone reportedly traversed Moldovan airspace for 17 minutes before crossing into Romania.

Residents of Kyiv described a fleeting sense of peace, as the recent lull in attacks allowed them some semblance of normalcy. Yana, a 19-year-old supermarket worker, reflected on the dichotomy of feelings when foreign guests were present, stating that the tranquility vanished as soon as the guests departed, and the relentless drone and missile strikes resumed. This dichotomy underscores the ongoing turmoil as Russia continues to unleash military might against Ukrainian targets.

Long Range Strikes

Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range air strikes in recent months, targeting Russian oil infrastructure and online retailer warehouses to raise the cost to Moscow. Both deny deliberately targeting civilians. Ukrainian drones damaged civilian infrastructure in Saratov, Russia, while five people were killed in attacks on Crimea, Bryansk, and Kursk regions.
